Disaster mgmt plan in Phewa watershed area
In order to minimise and control the risk of natural disasters, a broad disaster management programme has been initiated at six VDCs in the Fewa Lake watershed area.
The programme, launched by the United Nations Development Programme in coordination with various government organisations and NGOs, aims at strengthening institutional policy for risk management, establishing strategic relations with concerned authorities to minimise disasters through community involvement. It also includes improving emergency preparedness and its efficiency.
Programme chief Man Bahadur Thapa said that besides taking a heavy toll on human lives, the centre of tourism, Fewa Lake, is at risk of being buried due to floods and landslides. “We launched the programme to raise awareness and reduce disasters,” he said.
Thapa said they would adopt specific measures to reduce disasters after analysing risks in concerned VDCs. He further said that the watershed area could be better developed and conserved by raising awareness among local people. The programme has been launched at Dhikurpani, Badhauretamagi, Kaski kot, Sarangkot, Chapakot and Pumdibhumdi VDCs.
The UNDP has provided equipment used for search and rescue operations and primary aid for VDC-level disaster management committees. Along with a kit box, equipment such as hand mikes, helmets, boots, life jackets, scissors, shovels and emergency lights, worth around Rs 460,000, were handed over to Dhikurpani Pokhari VDC on Wednesday.
UNDP has also launched the programme in other districts like Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Rukum, Sunsari and Mahottari. According to available data, every day two people perish and 10,000 more are displaced yearly due to natural disasters in the country.
