NEW FRAMEWORK IN AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT, RS. 2.72 MILLION TO BE INVESTED IN HIMALI PROJECT
At a time when climate change has affected human life in Himalayan and high hill areas, the programme launched by the High Mountain Agriculture and Livelihood (HIMALI) Project have been seen successful.
The success is attributed to the moving ahead of agro projects with modern technology by using local skills and resources as per the desire of the local farmers.
The HIMALI project has been implemented in Sankhuwasabha and Solukhumbu districts of the Eastern Region, Dolakha and Rasuwa of Central Region, Manang and Mustang of Western Region, Dolpa, Mugu, Jumla and Humla in Mid-Western Region.
A total of Rs. 2.72 billion has been invested in the projects including Rs. 408 million of government, Rs. 1.80 billion of Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Rs. 513.9 million of the beneficiaries.
Senior Programme Director of the project Kaushal Kumar Pandey said some 299 projects have been selected for the current fiscal year 2070-71 BS.
Of the selected projects, 63 have been approved and they will receive Rs. 138.9 million. These projects will create some 7,500 employment opportunities and has set a target to get economic benefit worth 20 million US Dollars. It increases their income and brings improvement in livelihood.
The project brought with ADB grant assistance will provide grants in crop cultivation, animal husbandry, and herb-related enterprises. -: 14:- It has invested in goat and chyangra and sheep rearing, wool processing in Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Dolakha, Mustang, Dolpa, Jumla, Mugu and Humla districts and milk processing in Dolpa, Mugu and Manang districts.
It has also promoted in commercial organic vegetable farming, spices, cardamom, akabare khursani (chilly), poultry, allo, chiraito and other herbs, orange, apple, kiwi and other fruits and paper.
It will also move ahead projects of cold storage, agro tourism, trout fisheries, bee keeping, hand paper and lokta.
The projects also aim to spend 3 million US dollars for strengthening of various bodies and resource centers under the Ministry of Agriculture.The project started on Asar 16, 2068 BS will run until Asoj 14, 2074 BS.
