Student unions vandalise TU departments
KATHMANDU, FEB 25 - Twelve student unions on Monday vandalised two Tribhuvan University central departments in protest against TU plans to implement the semester system at the master’s level.
Union affiliates smashed windows at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and the English Department, claiming that they were not consulted on the matter.
The unions have launched joint protests against the TU decision to limit the semester system to its central departments initially. They have demanded the programme in all affiliated colleges. They argue that the TU should continue with the annual system until infrastructure is developed at all colleges offering master’s courses.
The unions on Sunday had warned all the department heads not to start the admission process without addressing their demands. Though the university has invited applications from students, the process has been stalled due to the protests.
The TU Executive Council has called on agitating unions to voice their differences through dialogue. “We will try to sort problems through dialogue,” said Ranta Dhakal, general secretary of the All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary.
Meanwhile, TU Teachers’ Association ( TU TA) staged a sit-in at the varsity’s central office in Kirtipur on Monday saying that TU had failed to implement previous agreements with it. Yogendra Narayan Badabariya,
chairman of the Association, said that they were compelled to stage the sit-in as agreements reached between the Campus Administration and Association had not been acted on even after six months. The agreement includes provisions for promoting TU teachers regularly and giving permanent status to TU teachers working on a contract basis.
NSU seeks PU row resolution
KATHMANDU: Nepal Student Union, Pokhara University chapter, has called for immediate resolution of problems at Nobel Academy, Kathmandu, a Pokhara University affiliate.
The NSU held a press conference in the Capital on Monday to voice its demand, stating that the number of students admitted to Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Technology and Bachelor in Public Health programmes by the Academy exceeded the quota and that the university should take responsibility of the additional students.
The Nepali Congress student wing also demanded action against university officials, chief of Health Professionals’ Council, officials at Nobel Academy and those involved in the ‘student admission scam’.
The union claimed its timely warning to not admit excess number of students was not heeded. The NSU has locked the planning division of the university and has demanded stern action if its demands are not addressed urgently.
