Election Commission likely to block Bamdev Gautam’s will to transfer SSP Ramesh Kharel

28 May, Kathmandu: SSP Ramesh Kahrel is a celebrity and there has been much talk of the town about him due to many reasons; from his action against goons to his anti-corruption statement, and many others.
For making a statement on Saturday at an anti-corruption campaign in the capital, SSP Kharel has been dragged into controversy once again. He said: “Dear Minister (the program was also attended by Foreign Affairs Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey) do not pick those corrupt DIGs for their promotion into the AIG of Nepal Police. They have visited the power-centers by taking briefcases with full of money. They are opportunists.”
On the basis of the statement, the Home Ministry is seeking Election Commission’s consent to transfer the Chief of Kathmandu Police SSP Kharel to the Human Resource Department of Nepal Police Headquarters. The government should get a nod from the election commission for the recruitment, promotion and transfer of government officials after the enactment of the Election Code of Conduct.
Home Secretary Surya Silwal, who was recently brought in the Home Ministry for being the UML supporter, has also seconded Gautam’s move against SSP Kharel. Gautam was of the argument that the June 22 constituent assembly by-election to be held in Kathmandu Constituency-2 would not be in UML’s favor if Kharel was not ousted from the existing office.
It is learnt that Home Minister and UML leader Bamdev Khanal is not very happy with SSP Kharel due to latter’s bold action against goons—mostly politically backed.
But, the Chief Election Commissioner Nilkantha Upreti, Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav and Commissioner Ila Sharma are learnt to have opposed the idea of Kharel’s transfer.
Likewise, a large number of facebook user youths and some RTI activists have condemned the government’s move to transfer SSP Kharel just by he made anti-corruption statement.
