‘Chari’ killed in crossfire: HM

KATHMANDU, AUG 09 - Minister for Home Affairs Bam Dev Gautam has said that notorious criminal Dinesh Adhikari alias “Chari” had died in crossfire with the police.

Deputy Prime Minister Gautam, a CPN-UML vice-chairman, maintained that Adhikari had opened fire at the police who had stopped him near Bhimdhunga. He was apprising the House on the killing of Adhikari as directed by Speaker Subas Nembang on Thursday following objection, mainly from CPN-UML, lawmakers over the police action.

Adhikari, according to Gautam, faced several criminal charges including arms possession. The home minister also told the House that the police were on the lookout for the notorious criminal on the charge of threatening two individuals.

Gautam also informed the House that the Home Ministry was collecting further information about the killing. However, UML lawmaker Rajendra Pandey, who represents Adhikari’s home district Dhading, objected to the reply furnished by the home minister charging that the response sounded like a “police report”.

“I had demanded an inquiry into the killing. But nothing has happened towards that end,” said Pandey, adding that the event would not die down. Speaker Nembang repeatedly reminded Pandey that there was no provision to comment on the response.

Meanwhile, some visitors applauded when Pandey made his remarks in Parliament. They were later taken out of the House by marshals.
