MUMBAI, APR 29 - With two episodes of his stand-up comedy show per week and an impending feature film debut looming over his head, comic entertainer Kapil Sharma is currently going through the most hectic time of his life. And now he has a nutritionist accompanying him to all his shootings, as he needs to lose weight for his movie project. The irregular hours and the erratic schedules have taken their toll on his health. “My schedules are so jampacked that I just snatch sleep and food whenever I could. But I’ve decided health comes first. I’ve got a guy to control my food intake. The trouble is, he feeds me boiled vegetables for dinner.”

“But then after that when I’m on my own, I end up cheating and snacking on bread and omelette while shooting. So I’m not losing as much weight as I’d like to,” he added.

Fortunately, Kapil’s back problem has been taken care of. “I’ve been regularly working out and doing back exercises. So the back problem is gone. But nowadays I have shoulder pain,” he said, adding that he is fighting a desperate battle with his schedules.

“I need to create a bank of episodes of my show before I start shooting for my film from May 15. I can’t run back-and-forth from the film set to the shooting of the show. They’re two completely different disciplines, and I can’t allow them to clash.”

“Stand-up comedy comes as naturally to me as breathing. But film acting is an entirely new experience for me. I’ve to give it my hundred percent,” said the comedian, who is set to make his film debut with a Yash Raj Films project. Contrary to plans, the channel has refused to cut down the frequency of Comedy Nights With Kapil by half.

“The channel says the TRPs will suffer if we cut down the episodes. Luckily, for me I got an unexpected reprieve when the first schedule of my film Bank Chor was shifted from April to May,” he said.

Kapil says he has no time for himself. “My mother calls to complain that I don’t call her.”

KATHMANDU, APR 29 - Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor Yubaraj Khatiwada said on Monday that the central bank had adopted a zero tolerance policy against financial crime.

Misdeeds in the financial sector have swelled in recent years along with an increase in the number of financial institutions. Several companies have become crisis-ridden as a result of the transgressions of their operators, many of whom have landed in jail for embezzling public deposits.  

Governor Khatiwada said that the regulatory body was working on reforms in the financial sector to ensure that it runs efficiently and in a transparent manner.

The central bank has recently taken measures requiring banks and financial institutions (BFIs) to provide greater disclosure. It is also planning to introduce a new NRB Act enabling it to liquidate crisis-ridden BFIs and revamp the Bank and Financial Institution Act to give greater power to the central bank.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Nepal Rastra Bank Employees’ Association to mark its silver jubilee, Khatiwada said NRB had been facing lots of challenges in the process of reforming the financial sector.

“However, NRB has adopted the policy of maintaining a solid footing in the present situation. A time will come when it will have to look forward and not remain in its present position,” he said.

Lauding the role of the trade union in improving NRB, the governor stressed the need to strengthen the central bank too. “Unless the regulator keeps itself upgraded with the changing times, the functioning of the entire financial sector cannot be improved.”

Meanwhile, a majority of the speakers at the programme criticised the uneven pattern of the loan portfolios maintained by BFIs with most of them limiting their lending in urban areas. Due to this trend, most people in rural areas are still deprived of the opportunity of benefiting from financial services, they said.

Similarly, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal said the role of fiscal, financial and monetary policies were vital during social transitions like the present one in order to maintain stability. “NRB now needs to focus on improving the economic indicators of the rural economy,” he added.

Leaders of the employees’ union stressed the need to develop a financial inclusion modality to give access to the poor in the financial system. “Needy people have been compelled to pay high interest rates for loans, and such a situation should end,” they said.

KATHMANDU, APR 29 - The first session of the Legislature-Parliament was prorogued on Tuesday without appointing 26 lawmakers . The Cabinet failed to make the appointments in over two months of government formation.

The House session was ended after the government failed to give it business. President Ram Baran Yadav announced the end of the session at the request of the government. Major parties--Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN (Maoist)--are engaged in a blame game over the delay in the appointments.

The NC has said the process was delayed due to non-cooperation from the UML and the UCPN (Maoist). The two parties say Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has not demanded names from them for the purpose.

The first session of Parliament ran for 31 days and held 32 meetings. The first meeting of Parliament was held on February 26 which endorsed 22 of the 24 ordinances issued by the President after the dissolution of Parliament on May 27, 2012.

The passage of the bill related to the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission on Enforced Disappearances is one of the major achievements. The House also elected NC President Sushil Koirala as the prime minister and Subas Chandra Nembang as its Speaker.

The Parliament endorsed the proposal regarding Army mobilisation during the second Constituent Assembly election. Other tasks are formation of various committees and endorsement of the rules of procedure.

BIRATNAGAR, APR 30 - Chief Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma has said that he cannot speak on the recommendation of judges to the post of justices in the Supreme Court by the Judicial Council (JC) as the case is sub judice in the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC).

"I do not speak on this matter as it is sub judice in the PHSC," he said while inaugurating newly constructed building for the appellate court in Biratnagar on Tuesday.

Stating that apart from protecting their rights, it is the responsibility of the apex court and the JC to appoint justices and take action against them, he said that the JC recommended names of justices as per its responsibility.

He said that he is committed to maintain rule of law, adding that the court should be free from any wrongdoings and that justices should have favourable environment to work. He also urged people to suggest him if he fails to maintain rule of law.

JC member, Khem Narayan Dhungana said that conspiracy is being hatched to defame the judiciary by dragging the JC into this incident.

Begnas Lake is a freshwater lake in Kaski district of Nepal located in the south-east of the Pokhara Valley. Tourism entrepreneurs from Pokhara are setting their sights on domestic tourists to boost their business . The tourism entrepreneurs from the Lake City - still the first preferred domestic travel destination for many Nepalis - are making their pitch with a campaign ‘Lets go to Pokhara’.

The first leg of the campaign that started from Ilam recently concluded in Kathamndu. The campaign was initiated to develop travelling habit amongst the Nepali and attract them to Pokhara. “The campaign was started as the promotion of the domestic tourism is beneficial for the entire tourism industry,” said Biplov Poudel, president of Paschimanchal Hotel Association.

Under the campaign, the tourism entrepreneurs from Pokhara travelled to various bordering cities like Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Dhangadi and Mahendranagar and interacted with the locals. “The idea was also to interact with the local tourism entrepreneurs,” said Poudel.

First such campaign was held in early 2000 when the tourism industry was badly hit by the insurgency.

That campaign was successful in developing touring habit among the Nepalis and promoting the internal tourism, according to Bikal Tulachan, general secretary of the association.

“Arrival of domestic tourists is satisfactory in Pokhara and this campaign will further aid it,” said Tulachan. Domestic tourists account for 30 percent of the hotel occupancy in Pokhara and the association aims to increase that to 50 percent. The Lake City boasts about 400 hotels with 12,000 beds.

Poudel said that local tourism entrepreneurs of the cities they travelled suggested them to provide quality transportation service to Pokhara from the bordering cities for the success of Visit Lumbini Year 2012.
